Are you part of the batch that just left camp or are you part of those preparing to join the khaki gang? Well, here is a fact you need to arm yourself with.
Some people had huge plans of how their #19,800 paid by the Federal Government was going to be the solution to all their problems only for them to get it and realize it is nothing compared to their huge appetites or growing needs. Some have already seen and handled huge money while in school so they now feel that the #19,800 is really nothing to count on. Some have flexed their entrepreneurial muscles in school and loved the thrill of business, so doing a business in their service year was a no brainer. While there are some who have heavy responsibilities waiting for them at home and they are expected to not only survive but to also send money back home.
Whatever may be the case, a lot of youth corpers soon realize that the Federal Government salary will not be enough for them to do much so they seek out ways of making more money while serving.
In view of that, here are four (4) businesses that any youth corper can do while serving and have another stream of income to keep you going:
1. Housing Agent: Youth corpers will always have the problem of housing themselves in the new environs they enter and solving that problem is something that has the potential of giving you serious money. If you are already serving in a state and have taken out time to know the state and their housing prices, you can easily do this business. All you have to do is liaise with the landlords/other agents and make prior arrangements with them before the next batch of youth corpers leave camp. Then you can paste posters of accommodation or talk to as many as you can about your solution to their problem; you can join groups for youth corpers in your state and post about how you can help them get accomodation. You can also meet them at the secretariat where they are welcomed, at corpers lodges, family houses or at CDS. If you are able to get 10 people at #5000 naira profit each, that’s almost your allawee for 3 months.
Whatever be the case, try it out and you really have nothing to lose.
2. Private Tutor: A large number of corpers will be teachers in schools no doubt. If you are given the privilege of being a teacher, nothing stops you from teaching the students privately and making serious extra bucks. People don’t know that private tutoring is serious cash in Nigeria today! It can even be your only source of income and you will still live fine and when you add it to your portfolio as a teacher, you are making serious money. It can give you as much as 50k every month if you take it really serious.
Just make friends with the students, be a great teacher by knowing what you teach, meet their parents and talk it over with them. They will be glad that a young guy or girl is trying to make something out of his life and also help their children. Even if you are not in a school, still look out for a few people you can tutor on a vocation, skill or subject you know. You can also teach your fellow youth corpers.
Meet parents in Churches, and Mosques or anywhere and tell them what you can offer. A necessary skill acquisition training, especially computer skills would sell you very well. Just be sure to speak to the right persons.
3. Product Selling:Most people will be thrown very far away from their normal habitat to a place they have never gone to before. Instead of whining and complaining, you can use it to your advantage. You can buy goods that are cheap in your area and sell it for a huge amount of money in your new environ as it may be scarce and costly. For instance, someone from the north posted to the west can bring in foodstuffs from home at cheap rates to sell to people in your new place. If from the east, you can buy palm oil in the east and sell in the north. From Benue you can buy yam and sell in Bayelsa or any place you are. From Lagos or Onitsha you can buy cheap stuffs and sell in other parts of the country like Abuja or Port Harcourt where it is more expensive. It involves some real planning and strategy but it works and people have done it. It has some risks like transportation and all other risks of selling physical products like market penetration but if you plan well, you can do it and completely forget your allawee in no time.
4. Internet Business:The internet rocks right now and there is much work you can do on the internet to make you money as a side hustle. There are emerging jobs like content development, social media management, digital marketing, mini importation etc that you can do and make serious money. Just go online and search for endless internet opportunities and key into one. It is necessary that the youths understand that their destiny is now in their hands and not necessarily depending on the government or their families.
While you can complain and post on social media about how the government should increase your allawee, you can still do something with your lives. Forget about the government salary as your main source of income and when your mates are anxiously waiting and crying for government to pay every month, you are living large and smiling to the bank always.
